This is an article on a topic that doesn't get as much attention as it's due. However, the proposal to "legalize multi-family zoning in current single-family zones" is too generalized a prescription to offer a viable strategy for remedying some of the housing problems we currently face. Many existing neighborhoods comprising single-family dwellings are superb examples of livable habitats that took years to evolve and which often provide a type of housing accessible to people of moderate means; simply plunking down multi-unit dwellings amidst them in the hope that it will cure current ills could actually end up destroying something of great value. Instead, let's think about smart densification--upzoning to allow for midrise units along central thoroughfares, for instance, then stepping down in density as one moves away from a downtown core, with lots and home sizes growing in size accordingly. In other words, how the streetcar suburbs were once conceived, and how Transit-oriented Developments are today.
